New Zealands most scenic 90 Km Adventure Mountain Bike Race.
Approx ride time 4 to 8 hours for individuals or two person teams.

Message from the Race Organisers for the 2011 event...

The Last Great race! Established in 2002, this scenic 90km adventure mountain bike race was held for the last time on Sunday 5th June 2011.
The 10th and last Lake Tekapo Mtb Pursuit had to be completed on an alternate course due to overnight rain and high river levels. The course was 82km up and back course on the west side of the lake. Competitors completed a 1-2 km cross country loop near Ribbonwood hut and then returned on the same track. The weather was fine and mild but the rain meant  there was lots of water and mud. The track was a challenge and many competitors rated it tougher than going all the way around! Many thanks to other sponsors, helpers, and supporters. Prize giving was at the Lake Tekapo Community Hall followed by a get together and a few drinks - it proved to be a good positive and enjoyable event to finish on.

Race starts on the village green with a staggered start with elite riders leading off at 9am and 3-5minute intervals between all other time splits. The ride goes along the lakefront heading through the motor camp and via the pines out to Godley Peaks Road . With 10km of sealed road the field is able to spread itself before moving onto shingle surface at Lake Alexandra turn-off. At the Cass River the track becomes a 4WD surface and throughout this section it is undulating and can be greasy or icy (depending on weather conditions). The crossing of the Godley River is approx 10km above the head of the Lake, all riders will be directed onto the river bead and MUST follow the marked course across this 2km braided river bead. The surface is stony but ride-able and the water is very cold, efforts to protect your feet & lower legs is recommended, or at least carry a spare pair of socks/shoes to change into once the Macaulay River has been crossed. On the east side of the Macaulay River will be a drink and shelter station with port-a-loo's. The remainder of the course back to Tekapo is on a good gravel surface. You will turn-off at the pines at the regional park to ride the last 2km on single track back to the finish area on Pioneer Drive .

PLEASE NOTE: Normal road rules apply at all times, on ALL roads throughout this event. There is only limited cell phone coverage on the course.

ALTERNATIVE COURSE

In the event of adverse weather or unsafe river levels an alternative course will be provided on the day, this will be at the discretion of the race organisers and safety advisors. However in the event of heavy snow where riding is not possible the event will be cancelled and entry fees will not be refunded.

The climate can be extreme. At this time of year be prepared for frost and cold:
1. Wear or carry a wind proof jacket.

4. Carry food to snack (no littering please) and take drink, (you can refill with water from the rivers if you choose).
5. Carry a survival Blanket
6. Carry bike repair gear - puncture kit, pump, spare tube, allen keys, chain breaker, etc.
7. If you estimate your complete cycle time for 90km as 7 hours or more you must carry a bike light - front and rear for the bike or head torch and rear light for the bike.
Sunset is at approx 5.10pm and it will be dark by 6.00pm.
