Race starts on the Lake Tekapo Village Green. It is a staggered start with elite riders leading off at 9am and 3-5 minute intervals between all other time splits. The ride goes along the lake front towards the motor camp, through the pines and out onto Godley Peaks Road. There is 10km of sealed road then onto gravel. At the Cass River it changes to 4WD/farm tracks, the course can be described as undulating the whole way around the Lake. The crossing of the Godley River is approx 10km above the top of the Lake, riders will be directed onto the river bed by marshals and all riders MUST follow the marked course across the 3km wide river valley. It is a stony but ridable surface, there are a number of braids to the Godley River, all of which are very cold and approx knee depth. Previous experience of river crossings and portaging of a bike is of benefit. A 4WD track takes you past the Lilybank Lodge at the top of the Lake, you then reach the Macaulay River which has 3-4 braids to cross, once through these you have reached half way. Take the time to change socks/footwear. Teams tag here and change transponders and the Half Ride cyclists set off from this area at the Marshals command. A drink station (provided by Mt Gerald station) will also be here, as will port-a-loo’s for a comfort stop. The remainder of the course is on good gravel road. You will be turned off at the Pines, just before Tekapo and the remaining 2-3km of the ride is along the lake edge. The finish line is beside the Chalet Boutique Motels on Pioneer Drive.
Please Note: Normal road rules apply at all times in this event. There is only limited cell phone coverage on the course.
In the event of adverse weather or unsafe river levels, the above course will be changed at the discretion of the race organisers and safety advisors. Details of the alternative course will be described at the race briefing. In the event of extreme weather (i.e. heavy snow) the event may be cancelled (entry fees are non-refundable in the event of cancellation due to extreme weather).
For further details phone Peter or Margaret on (03) 680 6207 Fax (03) 680 6211

The climate can be extreme. At this time of year be prepared for frost and cold:

5. Carry a survival Blanket
6. Carry bike repair gear - puncture kit, pump, spare tube, allen keys, chain breaker, etc.
